If you watched the Community Shield and wondered how the Premier League champions, Manchester City, were going to fare this season, it did not take long to show just how.
If you wondered how new signing, Erling Haaland, would adapt to the English League, it did not take that long too. Only 36 minutes had passed and the Norwegian was sat on the turf, legs crossed, both hands up, middle finger bent to the thumb, meditating, as he celebrated his first goal.
But it was not just them. Arsenal was also convincing on the opening night. The new signings, Gabriel Jesus and Aleksandr Zinchenko had also made instant impacts, the latter assisting the first goal.
It was an exciting first week of football in the EPL for many fans. And yet, it is about to get even better with the London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham to come in Gameweek 2.
Review of Gameweek 1
The season’s opening week was filled with some breathtaking goals, unique upsets and drama.
The Gunners did enough to defeat Crystal Palace with William Saliba excellent in defence.
Newly-promoted Bournemouth eased to a 2-0 win against Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa as Newcastle defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0.
And yet, the first upset happened in London where Liverpool had to force Fulham to a 2-2 draw. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored both goals for the hosts.
Tottenham were rampant, hit Southampton 4-1 as Leeds United managed a 2-1 win against Wolves.
A Jorginho penalty was enough to see Chelsea past a stubborn Everton side.
Brentford had to come from two goals down to force a share of the spoils against Leicester City.
Then Brighton went to Old Trafford and earned a brilliant win against Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United. Cristiano Ronaldo could only start from the bench.
At the London stadium, it was the Haaland show against West Ham. The 22-year old scored both Manchester City goals to kick-start his Premier League career.
